Maltodextrins: Effective for Probiotics, How do Probiotics differ from Prebiotics?

The primary similarity between prebiotics and probiotics is that they are both integral to our body’s health. The presence of both improves gut health, however, each plays a different role. Probiotics are live bacteria, generally known as microflora, that exist in certain foods or supplements. It is good for the body’s digestive system.  Whereas prebiotics is derived from carbs that humans are unable to digest, mostly fibers. The beneficial bacteria in our guts feed off this fiber. They make their way to the lower digestive tract where they aid the beneficial bacteria to grow by acting as its food. The relationship between them is quite evident, probiotics need access to prebiotics to work effectively.

After taking antibiotics, our body can lose the good bacteria that aid our gut health, probiotics help it replace them. They can help balance your good and bad bacteria to keep your body working the way it should.

In addition to being food to the beneficial bacteria, prebiotics can help your body absorb calcium, stabilize the blood sugar levels, ferment food faster in your digestive system, and improve cell health lining your gut.

A diet accommodating a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fermented foods can help you consume a sufficient amount of probiotics and prebiotics to keep your gut healthy, by providing both the bacteria and its food. If, however, there is a lack of these two in your body, a doctor prescribed supplements to get it up to a satisfactory level, because a deficiency can lead to digestive system problems such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

The connection behind Probiotics and Maltodextrin

Now that we have established a clear difference between prebiotics and probiotics, let’s shift focus to how maltodextrins are effective for probiotics. Maltodextrin is a carbohydrate obtained through enzymatic hydrolysis of starch and is suitable for consumption.

According to the research on the improvement of the efficacy of probiotics, carbohydrates like maltodextrin, act as a synergistic agent in the supplement. The combined effect of mixing both is much more than the individual effect of the probiotics themselves. Maltodextrin is used in small amounts, as an ingredient in producing supplements, by different companies as a stabilizing excipient. In simpler words, it does not have direct therapeutic action. Instead, it aids manufacturing, supports, protects, and enhances the stability of the product. Maltodextrin is also helpful in making the supplement more soluble in water, as it is easier to digest than most carbohydrates.

Maltodextrin does not interfere with, nor harm the friendly bacteria. In reality, the opposite is true, maltodextrin is a safe, natural, non-GMO gluten-free that is clinically proven safe and effective in improving probiotics potency and shelf life. A small amount of maltodextrin acts as a food for the probiotics. As the amount used is so small that it does not have any effect on our body’s yeast.

In conclusion, studies show that maltodextrin, when used with probiotics, makes the probiotic supplements more effective by enhancing the microorganisms’ effects.
