Maltodextrins: The Elixir for Industrial Formulations

The Elixir for Industrial Formulations,, Maltodextrin is used in several industries as a flavor carrier, bulking agent, and spray-drying agent. It is a significant source of carbohydrates and osmolality control. It is easy to digest and can provide instant energy. In food products, maltodextrin powder can help thicken food and liquids to bind all the ingredients together. It improves the texture and flavor; it helps preserve perishable items by increasing the shelf life and can be used to replace sugar or fat in low-calorie processed foods.

Food Industry

Maltodextrin is a food thickener in beer, ice cream, infant formula, brewing, potato chips, and jerky, frozen food.

Bulking Agent

Owing to its low density, maltodextrin is often used as a filler in high-intensity sweeteners, like the sachet packets available to consumers at restaurants and coffee shops. It also keeps the sugar from clumping and acts as an anti-caking agent. It is also used in some mixed spices, such as meat rubs, to dilute the mixture.

Viscosity Management

In some industries, maltodextrin is used as a carbohydrate-based fat replacement. When it interacts with water in the formulation and gives off a heat-stable, smooth gel, it has a creamy texture and mouthfeel of fats. It can increase the viscosity of unprocessed products and add fat-like mouthfeel to finished products. Therefore, it is used in a wide range of products, from baked goods, salad dressings, and dips, to frozen desserts to sausages. Maltodextrin can aid in the stabilization of ice cream and frozen yogurt by controlling the melting character and increasing the freezing temperature.

Coating

Coating snacks and food that give off low-fat levels, like pretzels or cereals, with maltodextrin can give the product a shiny, crisp surface. When added to confectionery coatings, maltodextrin speeds up the process of turning slurry solids to dry the layers faster.

Beverage Industry

The beverage industry adds maltodextrin to its products. It adds mouth feel, makes it more soluble and consistent, and reduces the products’ sweetness. The beverage industry has a lot of advantages of this carbohydrate-based product because it can also help reduce costs as all the characteristics are provided in one product instead of needing many others.

Maltodextrin is easily digestible and gives off instant energy, making it an ideal ingredient for any sports drink. Similar to other carbohydrates, maltodextrin decreases glycogen breakdown during long-duration exercise. When combined with protein, maltodextrins can enhance glycogen recovery and stimulate muscle protein synthesis after exercise.

Pharmaceutical Industry

Maltodextrin is used as an ingredient in capsules in the pharma industry, as it neither adds nor reduces the value of the medicinal content while stabilizing the drugs. It is used in tableting pharmaceutical compounds, such as in roller compaction. Fruit and vegetable juice concentrates can be spray dried onto maltodextrin to create powdered forms. In molecular gastronomy, oils are often mixed with maltodextrin to create powdered versions with no additional flavoring.

Health & Personal care Industry

The carbohydrate-based product is used as an absorbent, binding agent, emulsion stabilizer, and film-forming agent in manufacturing cosmetic products. Moreover, we can find it in baby products, bath products, cleansing products, eye makeup, shaving preparations, and hair and skin care products.

Agriculture/Animal Feed/Poultry Industry

Maltodextrin is used as a stabilizer, thickener, anti-caking agent, and bulking agent. Maltodextrin may also be used in livestock feed products to provide an easily digestible energy source intermediate between starches and sugars.
