Native Tapioca Starch

Tapioca Starch

Tapioca Starch is a vegan and gluten-free food ingredient that has a wide variety of culinary and non-culinary applications. It is often added in food preparations to enhance the uniformity, stability and texture. Tapioca Starch can be used as a direct replacement for other starches such as Corn Starch, Potato Starch, Rice Starch and Arrowroot Starch. Tapioca Starch is considered a better choice than most available starch and All-purpose flour because of its thickening power. But what truly makes Tapioca Starch so unique from other sources of starch is the fact that, unlike other sources, genetically modified Cassava does not exist hence making Tapioca Starch inherently non-GMO. Shafi Gluco Chem has strong ties with the agriculture community and we believe that our farmers are an integral part of our supply chain. Our Kisaan Khushaal Program aims to benefit and improve the local tapioca and rice agronomy. Through this program, we holistically focus on our farmer's social equity and economic profitability; and at the same time make sure that our practices ensure environmental health.

How is Tapioca Starch produced?

Tapioca comes from the starchy, storage roots of the perennial plant known as Cassava, also called Manioc or Kappa. Cassava is cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions of Pakistan, East Asia and South America.

Following are the steps we take to produce Shafi Gluco Chem's Tapioca Starch,

  • Cassava Roots are peeled and washed thoroughly
  • The root is then grated and pulverized into a soft pulp
  • The pulp is mixed with water and screened to separate the starch
  • All the water from the mixture is removed to leave behind white powder (Tapioca Flour)
  • The dehydrated mixture is then passed to milling where the Tapioca Starch is milled to fine powder
  • The QC conducts microbiological tests on the milled powder to check that a consistent quality standard is achieved
  • Once approved the starch is further passed on for packaging and dispatch

More About Native Tapioca Starch:

Tapioca Starch is an excellent way to thicken sauces or texture meat, especially if a producer aims to limit the protein content in the end product. This also results in a soft, rather than a crusty texture. Furthermore, since Tapioca itself is rich in carbohydrates and starch content, tapioca starch can be a good source of energy that would be slowly released in the body over time.

Tapioca Starch has a wide variety of culinary uses and is particularly popular with Thai dishes. The starch is also used for baking breads and snacks.
